Duties of Wife and Husband

The rights and duties of wife, husband etc., are as under. The answer consists of only Vedic references.

Duties of wife

(1) Atharvaveda mantra 1/14/1:-

भगमस्या वर्च आदिष्यधि वृक्षादिव स्त्रजम् । महाबुध्न इव पर्वतो ज्योक् पितृष्वास्ताम् ।।१ ।।

A good wife should establish herself permanently in her husband’s house just as a mountain firmly establishes itself on ground.

If the wife is not learned and does not deal with the family problems etc., faithfully, gently and happily than Atharvaveda mantra 2/14/5:-

यदि स्थ क्षेत्रियाणां यदि वा पुरुषेषिताः । यदि स्थ दस्युभ्यो जाता नश्यतेतः सदान्वाः ॥५ ॥

states that she can be divorced and vice-versa.

(2) Atharvaveda mantra 3/25/1:-

उत्तुदस्त्वोत् तुदतु मा धृथाः शयने स्वे ।

इषुः कामस्य या भीमा तया विध्यामि त्वा हृदि ॥१ ॥

A wife should long to be in the company of her husband.

(3) Atharvaveda mantra 3/25/5:-

आजामि त्वाजन्या परि मातुरथो पितुः । यथा मम क्रतावसो मम चित्तमुपायसि ।।

A wife should be attracted towards the loving attitude of her husband and should always remain sincere to her husband.

(4) Atharvaveda mantra 3/25/6:–

व्यस्यै मित्रावरुणौ हृदश्चित्तान्यस्यतम्। अथैनामक्रतुं कृत्वा ममैव कृणुतं वशे ।।६।

A wife should discover so much love and affection in her husband’s house that she should not remember her parent’s house at all.

(5) Atharvaveda mantra 3/30/2:–

अनुव्रतः पितुः पुत्रो मात्रा भवतु संमनाः ।

जाया पत्ये मधुमतीं वाचं वदतु शन्तिवाम् ॥२ ॥

A wife should conduct herself sweetly towards her husband.

(6) Atharvaveda mantra 4/38/1 – main qualities of wife:

उद्धिन्दतीं सञ्जयन्तीमप्सरां साधुदेविनीम् । ग्लहे कृतानि कृण्वानामप्सरां तामिह हुवे ।।१ ॥

(a) Should have conquered sensuality (b) hardworking (c) possessing best behaviour (d) striving to maintain home in the best way.

(7) Atharvaveda mantra 4/38/2:–

विचिन्वतीमाकिरन्तीमप्सरां साधुदेविनीम् । ग्लहे कृतानि गृहणानामप्सरां तामिह हुवे ॥२ ॥

(a) Preserves and increases husband’s money

(b) Spends a portion of husband’s earnings on Yajyen.

(8) Atharvaveda mantra 4/38/3:-

यायैः परिनृत्यत्याददाना कृतं ग्लहात्। सा नः कृतानि सीषती प्रहामाप्नोतु मायया । सा नः पयस्वत्यैतु मा नो जैषुरिदं धनम् ॥३ ।।

(a) she does all household jobs with zeal and enthusiasm.

(b) Elevates the house in a very mature way.

(d) conserves the household earnings.

(9) Atharvaveda mantra 4/38/4:-

या अक्षेषु प्रमोदन्ते शुचं क्रोधं च बिभ्रती । आनन्दिनीं प्रमोदिनीमप्सरां तामिह हुवे ॥४ ।।

(a) she remains happy

(b) does not get affected by sorrows and anger

(10) Atharvaveda mantra 4/38/5:-

सूर्यस्य रश्मीननु याः संचरन्ति मरीचीर्षा या अनुसंचरन्ति । यासामुषभो दूरतो वाजिनीवान्त्सद्यः । एर्वैल्लोकान् पर्येति रक्षन् । स न ऐतु होममिमं जुषाणो३न्तरिक्षेण सह वाजिनीवान् ।।५ ।।

(a) toils hard from sunrise to sunset.

(b) does her work in the light of the sun and does not confine herself to dark rooms devoid of sunlight.

(11) Atharvaveda mantra 6/8/1:–

यथा वृक्ष लिबुजा समन्तं परिषस्वजे ।

एवा परि ष्वजस्व मां यथा मां कामिन्यसो यथा मन्नापगा असः ॥१ ॥

A wife should be dependent on husband just as a creeper completely depends on the tree.

(12) Atharvaveda mantra 6/8/3:-

यथेमे द्यावापृथिवी सद्यः पर्येति सूर्यः ।

एवा पर्येमि ते मनो यथा मां कामिन्यसो यथा मन्त्रापगा असः ॥३ ।।

A wife should never even think about separating from her husband.

13) Atharvaveda mantra 7/47/2:-

कुहूर्देवानाममृतस्य पत्नी हव्या नो अस्य हविषो जुषेत ।

शृणोतु यज्ञमुशती नो अद्य रायस्पोषं चिकितुषी दधातु ॥२ ॥

A wife should remain healthy, possess expertise in household jobs, be God fearing and remember God’s name and possess divine qualities.

Duties of husband

(1) Atharvaveda mantra 1/34/5:–

परि त्वा परितत्लुनेक्षुणागामविद्विषे । यथा मां कामिन्यसो यथा मन्नापगा असः ॥५ ॥

The sweet and loving behaviour of the husband should make the wife inculcate love and affection towards him.

(2) Atharvaveda mantra 2/30/4:–

यदन्तरं तद् बाह्यं यद् बाह्यं तदन्तरम् । कन्यानां विश्वरूपाणां मनो गृभायौषधे ॥४॥

The husband should not hide anything from the wife. In this way he shall win over her heart.

(3) Atharvaveda mantra 5/25/6:-

यद् वेद राजा वरुणो यद् वा देवी सरस्वती । यदिन्द्रो वृत्रहा वेद तद् गर्भकरणं पिब ।।६।।

He should lead a disciplined, pious life.

(4) Atharvaveda mantra 6/9/2:–

मम त्वा दोषणिश्श्रिषं कृणोमि हृदयश्विषम् । यथा मम क्रतावसो मम चित्तमुपायसि ॥२ ॥

A husband should try to win over his wife with his love.

(5) Atharvaveda mantra 6/81/1:–

यन्तासि यच्छसे हस्तावप रक्षांसि सेधसि । प्रजां धनं च गृहणानः परिहस्तो अभूदयम् ॥१ ॥

A husband should lead a disciplined life and should be capable of earning money to sustain his married life.

(6) Atharvaveda mantra 6/89/1:–

इदं यत् श्रेण्यः शिरो दत्तं सोमेन वृष्ण्यम् । ततः परि प्रजातेन हार्दि ते शोचयामसि ॥१ ॥

A husband should respect his wife and consider his duty to protect the honour of his life.

Common duties

1). Atharvaveda mantra 2/30/2:-

सं चेन्नयाथो अश्विना कामिना सं च वक्षथः । सं वां भगासो अग्मत सं चित्तानि समु व्रता ॥२ ॥

Husband and wife should share everything in common. This sharing leads to their long life.

2). Atharvaveda mantra 6/11/1:-

शमीमश्वत्थ आरूढस्तत्र पुंसुवनं कृतम् । तद् वै पुत्रस्य वेदनं तत् स्त्रीष्वा भरामसि ॥१ ॥

The wife should possess a serene/calm nature and the husband should be hard working, possessing a strong body. This leads to a generation of brave children.

3). Atharvaveda mantra 6/42/1:-

अव ज्यामिव धन्वनो मन्युं तनोमि ते हृदः । यथा संमनसौ भूत्वा सखायाविव सचावहै ॥१ ॥

A husband and wife should be completely devoid of anger and should work together to accomplish household tasks.

4). Atharvaveda mantra 6/89/2:-

शोचयामसि ते हार्दि शोचयामसि ते मनः । वातं धूम इव सध्य१ङ् मामेवान्वेतु ते मनः ॥२ ॥

There should be perfect compatibility between husband and wife.

5). Atharvaveda mantra 6/36/1:-

ऋतावानं वैश्वानरमृतस्य ज्योतिषस्पतिम् । अजस्त्रं घर्ममीमहे ॥१ ॥

Husband –wife should gaze lovingly at each other and their faces should reflect happiness.

6). Atharvaveda mantra 7/37/1:-

अभित्वा मनुजातेन दधामि मम वाससा ।

यथासो मम केवलो नान्यासां कीर्तयाश्चन ।।१ ।।

The husband should never think about females other than his wives and the wife should dress up decently and sensibly covering all body parts.

7). Atharvaveda mantra 7/38/1:–

इदं खनामि भेषजं मां पश्यमभिरोरुदम् ।

परायतो निवर्तनमायतः प्रतिनन्दनम् ।।१ ।।

A wife should firmly hold that she shall never be away from her husband’s house and this firm conviction prevents the husband from being attracted towards other females.
